About Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep Brain Stimulation, or DBS, involves the implantation of a neurostimulator device in the brain to regulate the control of abnormal impulses or activities in the brain. DBS is a safe procedure that does not negatively impact the critical functions of the brain and effectively manages symptoms typical of Parkinson’s disease.

In DBS, a surgeon implants electrodes in the globus pallidus and subthalamic nucleus to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease and the thalamus to treat essential tremors.

DBS is an effective technique for curing conditions such as tremors, dystonia (movement disorder in muscles), epilepsy, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Parkinson’s disease (a neurological movement disorder).

Symptoms
  1. Difficulty in walking
  2. Tremor
  3. Stiffness
  4. Headache
  5. Mood swings
  6. Drowsiness
Diagnosis

Medical professionals conduct a routine physical examination, gather medical and family histories of the patient.

  1. MRI: MRI diagnoses the complete structure of the brain via a detailed image.
  2. Neurological Examination: Neurological examination is useful in analyzing the various affected activities such as walking, taste, balance, speaking ability, smell, and strength.
  3. Electroencephalogram: EEG is effective in diagnosing the electrical impulses of the brain.
Deep Brain Stimulation Procedure

Surgeons first fixate a head frame to restrict movement of the head during the procedure with surgical screws and pins. The procedure comprises two steps:

  1. The surgeon performs the first procedure by creating a hole in the skull through which a lead equipped with electrodes is implanted in the brain region generating the symptoms. Leads can be implanted on either the left or right side as per the symptoms.
  2. In the next week, Surgeons perform the second procedure where battery-powered pulse generator devices are implanted in the upper chest area under the skin. The surgeon attaches extension wires to the lead and tunnels it through the skin from the back of the ear down the neck to the pulse generator device.
  3. Two to three weeks later, the doctor turns on the implanted pulse generator with a handheld device. The device’s battery life is checked with the device, which can also be turned on and off.
  4. The patient will need several follow-up visits to confirm the device’s correct operation post-surgery.
