If an individual experiences pain, numbness or weakness in one or both legs, shoulder blade pain or urinary and fecal difficulties, a surgical procedure known as Laminectomy may present a viable solution to their ailments. Laminectomy takes its name from “lumbar” (pertaining to the lower spine), “lamina” (part of the spinal canal’s bony structure), and “-ectomy” (referring to removal). Laminectomy is performed to alleviate nerve root compression, also referred to as a “pinched nerve,” and the resultant pressure on one or more spinal nerve roots. After the administration of general anesthesia to induce a state of unconsciousness, lumbar laminectomy surgery is conducted with the patient lying on their abdomen or side. An incision made in the lower back enables access to the lumbar spine.
